MICHAEL L BERMAN, M.D.

Photographer

First, let me say, most importantly I am a physician.  More specifically I am a gynecologic oncologist which means that I take care of women with cancers of the female reproductive system: cancers of the uterus, cervix and ovaries in particular.  I have been a gynecologic oncologist for 40 years in the world of academic medicine, operating on women with cancers, treating them with chemotherapy when needed, sharing the joys of cures and the incredible sadness when cancers recur or my patients die.

I love what I do professionally and would not change my career choices if I had it to do over again, but dealing with serious and life threatening diseases has made me seek out beauty in nature for my own enjoyment and to provide some balance for me on a profoundly personal level.  I have taken up photography as a serious avocation 3 years ago.  I find that when I place my camera between my eyes and a particularly beautiful landscape or animal in the wild the result of releasing the shutter of my Nikon is often very beautiful, exciting or thought provoking.  It is a great pleasure to be able to share those images now on my Web page.  It is my wish that these images will touch you and give you a sense of connection with the beauty of nature and even provide a moment's escape from the ordinary and the difficult.

Just a bit of more personal information.  My wife of 49 1/2 years died in January, 2014 after a long battle with rheumatoid arthritis and breast cancer.  I learned subsequently that her breast cancer resulted from a genetic abnormality, the BRCA gene (BRCA2 to be precise) which has also impacted my 4 daughters in a very personal way.  All 4 of them are also BRCA positive and one of them underwent recent surgery for breast cancer at age 46 years.  Because we are on the threshold of so many major breakthroughs in cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment related to hereditary cancers, I will be donating 15% of all proceeds from the sale of my images to the Foundation for Women's Cancer to help support needed research in this field.
